G'day. I getting a "Windows Protection error. Please restart the machine" message on my Window 98Se computer. I can get into Safe Mode to try and troubleshoot it using msconfig, but the selective startup choice still produces the error. I believe my brother reinstalled or attempted to and still the error persists. I tried Dr Watson, Virus Checking, System File Checker, Registry Checker and scanning files and folders using Scandisk. Can you suggest any other diagnostics or solutions.

Additional information:
-Windows 98SE
-AMD Processer 800MHz or something
-128MB Ram

- The computer worked fine till I removed my ADSL router modem from the computer. - I removed the network cable. Tried putting it back as before but nothing changed.
- I have been regularly removing and connecting my ADSL modem to this computer - win98 and another computer - winXP
-I have been testing my wireless adapter and have setup internet connection sharing on the windows 98 computer. It runs as a start-up item now.

The error message usually comes up after a few seconds of Windows booting up (Window 98 bootscreen appears). The Windows 98 picture is then followed by a black screen with a blicking cursor, then the message appears.

Well, formating solved this error message. However it is back and I think my Netcomm NB5580 (W) ADSL modem has something to with it. Twice now, after connecting the modem to my Windows 98 computer, the Windows Protection Error message has appeared after a reboot. At the moment the computer is sitting there unuseable and same too for the modem. Well the modem is useful on my Windows Xp computer but its main purpose was on the Windows 98 computer.

Could there be a link between Windows 98 and the modem?

Note: I do recall connecting the cables whilst the computer was fully operational, including power, then when I restarted the error appeared.

Note: I have also posted a similar message to Netcomm, but reply is so slow.

I fixed the Windows Protection Error problem for computer. It was not the ADSL modem as I thought, but most likely the Graphics Card Driver. I am quite sure my uninstalling of this driver in Safe Mode made my computer useable again.

Thanks for your help
