Browser question
Recently a friend used my computer while I was away and I think he changed a setting on my browser. It used to be that when I typed something in the search box of any site such as Google, Amazon, Overstock.com, etc., the search box remembered if I had typed that same word or phrase previously so that I did not have to type the whole word or phrase again. Now my computer doesn't do that. I've got cookies enabled and Auto-Complete activated, but neither one of these things seems to be what I need to solve my problem. I am using IE6....

Be sure that the AutoComplete settings are enabled for that part of the feature.
In an IE window, click Tools > Internet Options > Content tab > AutoComplete... button. Check the Forms box beneath Use AutoComplete for... Note that you may need to close IE and open it again for the setting to take affect...

There is always a chance while you were away he ran some sort of history kill utility. It would kill all autocompletes until you surf long enough to create new ones.
