:upset: I'm very confused about this one. I got an old Compaq Presario 2100 running Win 95. I wanted to wipe all of the info on it so I partitioned and repartitioned it and then formated it. Then I went to reinstall the O.S. and it said this: NO FIXED DISK FOUND cannot create a temporary directory. If you have a HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive you will need to create an MS-Dos boot partition to set up windows. I have wiped other Hard Drives and never had this problem. Why has this happened? What can I do?

Is the BIOS or POST screen still recognising the drive?

Bootup using a Windows Startup disk and run FDISK.
Check the Partition Info if it is detecting the drive.

I did try that and when I do it says Fixed Disk not found.
It seems as if the drive is detected when I try to install the OS it just tells me info I posted in the last thread. Thanks

Did you make the primary dos partition active while in fdisk?
Has to be done. Can do it now if not active without disturbing what you have already done.

Yes I thought I did Baddog. I have done this before w/ no problems.

This Is What I Did:

Followed the instructions on How To Delete a Partition
(used a win 98 boot disk to do this)
Followed all the instructions given to me in the download section of this site on how to delete a partition (I have done this before w/ no problems)

Then followed the instructions on How to Create a Partition
(used a win 98 boot disk to do this)

Then followed the instructions on How to Format a Partition
(used a win 95 boot disk to do this, because the win 98 would not work)

Then I followed the instructions on How to Install Windows
(used win 98 boot disk and win 98 CD to install with)

When I was installing the OS it said there was an error on the Hard Drive and it stop loading.

And that was the end of that. So any sugestions/help?

Thanks again.

If you enter fdisk and option 4, does it give the following:
Partition: c: 1
Status: A
Type: Pri Dos
and the rest, Volume Label, Mbytes, System (fat32), and Usage

Baddog :fyi: When I try to enter FDisk it tells me no FDisk found. I can not get into FDisk. Boy I really don't under- stand this problem or what to do. :dizzy: Can I try to boot a different way? Someway to see what's on the HD?

Thanks

"I wanted to wipe all of the info on it so I partitioned and repartitioned it and then formated it."
How did you do all this the first time? Did you use a bootdisk?
Make sure your bios startup routine starts with the 'A' drive and install bootdisk and boot. Will the bootdisk start up? If yes, then at 'A' prompt, type fdisk.
I can't quite understand if you have done this before with this particular disk, why you can't bring fdisk up.
Do you have a barebones flop boot disk with just bare commands? Use it.
You may have to explain this again as it's not being consistent.
Sorry.
