Hello all,

I need a little help.

My PC is a Compaq and I am running Win98 SE.

Today I was running my maintenance tools, (Ad-Aware, McAfees VS, regseeker, HijackThis). All checked out to be ok. I then proceeded to run disk defrag. Well it stopped at 30%. My PC was still operating fine at this point.

I decide to run MSCONFIG and disable ALL of the startup items. I figured I would boot into safe mode and see if scan disk would work.

Well this is where my problem started. When I tried to boot into safe mode I received an error stating " One or more of your disk drives may have developed a bad sector" At this point it starts to perform a scandisk, however the bar indicator does not move. After 5 minutes it stops and said "Can not run scan disk on drive C".

After this the only thing I can do is start the reboot over. I can get the menu by hitting F8 . I can get to the C:\ prompt.

So far I have ran scanreg /fix, scanreg /restore, scandisk /opt. Still no change. :(

I can see the windows/options/cabs directories.

It will not boot up into Windows at all.

However after I issue the dir command while in DOS on the C: drive it list some files then hangs, after about 4 minutes I receive another error stating "unable to read from drive C".

How can I fix this if I can not run scandisk? Do I need to reformat the drive?

If I need to reformat the drive how do I get DOS back on after the reformat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Troy

Welcome :)

I would first suggest to create a Windows Startup floppy and boot from it and run the DOS Scandisk.

As for formatting, it will wipe all of your current data.

did u try booting from the windows 98 startup disc and run scandisc from there?

to get back DOS, you could use the Win98 Startup disc and use format to format and fdisk (/something, not sure) to get the file systems back in and reinstall Windows. google it, something should come up.

I have a boot up disk, I tried to run scandisk from that but it still does not work. At least I think I did it correctly?

I have no issues getting into DOS. It is when I am in DOS then Scandisk still will not work.

When I run Scandisk it just goes to the blue screen and sits there. I wait for 5 minutes then it dispplays an error "Can not run scandick on drive C"

You get that error with the DOS scandisk?

Goto the HDD Manufacturers site and download their disk diagnostics

Is a DOS scan disk the same as a WIN98 startup disk?

I would still recommend you goto the HDD Manufacturers site and download their disktools.

They should be easier to work with.
