Any help appreciated. In try to defrag disk on W98SE OS, it gets to about 10% and starts over repeatedly. When it starts over, there is a message that says the disk changed and then it starts over the defrag process.

No applications are running and in looking at the Task Manager, the only things running are Explorer (when I try to close this, the computer goes to shut down box) and Systry (this will not close).

So, I can't imagine what is running that is changing the disk. Everything else is turned off, including all anti-virus, spyware, and firewall tools.

Thanks for any help!

Howdy:

Boot into Safe Mode and run scandisk and defrag from there.. That is the recommended method..

I had the same problem so I just let it run one day just to see what would happen. It took 12 hours to finally complete (but it did complete correctly).

If you can get a copy of Defrag from a Window ME machine you'll find that it will run a lot faster and it works just fine on Win98.

If you download Diskeeper Lite, you can defrag on the fly (while Windows is running) It's free & works very well.
