Can anyone explain, in simple terms, the difference between DVD-RAM/DVD-R.
Then DVD/RW. Thank You :D

DVD-Video is the standard DVD which will work in your TV-connected DVD player.
DVD-ROM (DVD - Read Only Memory) is the name of a computer disk drive that reads DVDs and is also the name of the DVDs that are specifically for the DVD-ROM drive, and contain content including internet links, and any sort of software you would find on a CD-ROM.
DVD-RAM (Digital Versatile Disk - Random Access Memory) is the name for a DVD disk that can be burned to.
DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disk - Readable) is just like a CD-R: it is a DVD that can be written to but never erased. DVD-RW (DVD - Read/Write) is just like a CD-RW in that it can be written to and erased as many times as you want. DVD-RW supports 3 GB per side.
The difference is that DVD-RAM is the drive that burns DVDs. DVD-R is originally a blank DVD that can be written to and added to but never erased. DVD-RW is originally a blank DVD that can be written to and erased multiple times.
Note: there is much confusion about the meanings of all the different DVD types, and if you look at 2 sites one will tell you that DVDx is the disk reader but the other will tell you DVDx is the actual disk that is played. My definition is, to my knowledge, correct.

Thank You, for your reply. What would you recommend to get with a new computer?

sorry for the late reply. I recommend you get a combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW. They can cost between $200-$400 Australian when purchased alone and will play DVD Movies/Music, DVD-ROMs, CD Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW and will also burn CD-R and CD-RW. some will also read DVD-R discs. I would not recommend buying a DVD-R drive unless you really need to burn DVD disks as these can cost up to $5000 Australian. (US prices are roughly half of Australian prices)
