I found most of the information I needed already, but I am still having a problem with my other pc. First I had these files missing: himem.sys, dblbuff.sys, ifshlp.sys and command.com. I extracted these files from my cdrom and it worked. Now it is saying that it cannot find win.com. I extracted win.cnf like ms website says to, but I cannot rename anything. It only recognizes the d drive and nothing else. I am getting a c: prompt. It is also saying that set path=madcatz and there is a z: logon and some other things. I am not a whiz with pc problems, so I can use all the help I can get. The really important thing is that I don't want to lose my outlook express emails. There are some emails that are really important. I didn't know how to back them up before. Now I do and am doing so on this pc. HELP, PLEASE!!!

Thanks for your suggestion, but it is not working. It says that Type: cd\windows\command (enter) is an invalid directory.
Please help! Any other suggestions? Jennifer |

If you are at the C prompt in dos, there shouldn't be any reason the command:
cd\windows\command shouldn't work. (unless you system is totally screwed) You might also try this remedy: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q136630/ Hope this helps and good luck. My win.com is dated same as my W98Fe. BD

Might have something to do with a game you installed.
While in command prompt only, rename autoexec.bat and config.sys Example: Ren autoexec.bat autoexec.sav Example: Ren config.sys config.sav These files are not needed unless using some older dos programs. After you do that, reboot and see what comes up next. BD

rem - By Windows 98 Network - c:\windows\net initialize rem - By Windows 98 Network - ban /nc rem - By Windows 98 Network - ndisban rem - By Windows 98 Network - redirall rem - By Windows 98 Network - c:\windows\net start rem - By Windows 98 Network - arswait rem - By Windows 98 Network - z:login SET PATH=C:\MADCATZ SET MADCATZ=C:\madcatz SET MADCATZ=C:\madcatz SET MADCATZ=C:\madcatz |

What's up with this?
Go back in the command prompt where only the C prompt is up. Type dir/w (should display files in root directory in wide angle) 1. Do you see autoexec.bat and config.sys listed? 2. Do you also see autoexec.bat.sav and config.sys.sav that we renamed? If you see 1. but not 2., then the files were not renamed. If you see 1. and 2., then the files were recreated somehow. Let us know what you come up with. BD ![]() If this doesn't work out, go back to the boot menu and choose 'step by step' option. Just keep answering yes untill it asks if you want autoexec.bat or config.sys executed, say no and continue with the step by step answering yes. Explain any errors you may encounter. Your computer must of had Windows 95 on it, then it was upgraded: It also had Banyan VINES on it:
Banyan Virtual Integrated Network Service (VINES) is a network operating system with a UNIX kernel that allows users of popular PC desktop operating systems such as DOS, OS/2, Windows, and those for Macintosh systems to share information and resources with each other and with host computing systems. Is this PC hooked up to a Network? In October of 1999, Banyan became ePresence, a provider of Internet services. At the same time, it announced the obsolescence of VINES and other Banyan products Renaming the Autoexec and Config files, as BAD DOG suggest should of fixed the problem.

I haven't had a chance to do as bad dog suggests yet, but the computer is a gateway destination system and was custom made with destivu and win98. Win95 was never installed on this system. It was mostly for game playing and to be used as a television. We no longer use it for games, but as an internet connection and television.
Once I do all of these steps, are any of the files I had saved going to still be there? Jennifer (my son wanted to send these faces)

Config.sys and autoexec.bat has nothing with the files on you computer except to command and direct them to do different things.

"I did what you said about the dir/win and answered Y to everything."
I don't know what else to tell you, Pal. I did not say answer yes to everything. You have to either delete or rename autoexec.bat and config.sys or delete those 2 files altogether or rem out all the lines in those 2 files. Look back over this thread and do the things mentioned and get back because I have no idea what you mean about dir/win.
