Got a Compaq Presario today. Mom got it from a salvage sale at work. How do you get the thing open?!! I took the three screws out on the bottom but I still can't figure it out. After I finally got it to come up I saw that it was running Windows 95, the CD wouldn't open and it gets really hot on the bottom near the back of it. It reboots after a few minutes also. any ideas or help?

Hi Zip! It's a Compaq Presario laptop. The only numbers I can find on it are the Series Number--2900D and the FCC ID# ID42900E. I figured out how to get into the case, but it still acts like it is overheating. The fan is clean. The CD doesn't work. I don't know what the problem is. It really doesn't matter, I guess. If the CD doesn't work, I can't format and load anything. I can't figure out where to put the RAM either.(It has only 16 MB.) Think I'll let my son take it apart and try to put it back together. He needs to learn these things. ;)

Most of the laptops I have ever worked on, and that's about 1500 to date, have had their memory added from the bottom.

Now COMPAQ Presario's on the other hand, if my memory serves me correctly, you have to take the laptop apart to get to it.

To get to the memory you will need to remove all of the screws on the bottom and the back (where the ports are located). Also remove the hard drive, battery pack and any additional parts that can be removed.

After you remove the screws the part of the case below the keyboard should pop up. Now you will need to remove the keyboard. Once the keyboard is off you will need to eject the CDROM. There should be a couple of screws in there to remove before you can remove the case that holds the keyboard.

The memory is located to the left near the top.

Hope this helps some. :)

Thank you, Theoran! :) I will try that today. Just so all you guys (and gals) know, I think you are all great! I always recommend this site to anyone I know needs help. This is usually the first place I check in after I log on to the internet, even if I don't have a question. I just learn so much here. Thanks, everyone! ;) :D :)

K Grace,
Gee It is nice to hear from another Presario 2900 owner!
When I recieved my notebook I had the same problems your have described. So, I just let it set with the power supply on. The problems vanished after the battery was charged!
I have had problems with other used laptops untill I replaced the internal backup battery.
If you know of any resources for this notebook could u let me know?
I am searching for a manuel and maybe a parts computer to keep as a source for any parts I may need down the line.
