Member Ratings

More of a question rather than a comment or suggestion, but I notice that a lot of other sites have ratings that display beneath a members username on the left side or above each of their posts. This, IMO, is great because if you users give you different opinions, you can use this to base you judgement, rather than, let's say a hunch. I like how it gives each member a chance to make a name for themselves and also so they can see how other members view their assistance.

10,000 posts doesn't make you an asset to CyberTechHelp, obviously, but a member rating system would let new users and guests know, on average, just how helpful each member's suggestions are.

Like what? I'm not arguing it or anything, just don't see any flaws personally. What kind of flaws come to mind?

The only thing I can think would be if someone just didn't like someone else and gave them a bad rating or something for no good reason, but I suppose a mod would be able to reverse the damage done there if he/she didn't see any reason for the bad rating.

I agree with Dan.. I belong to sites that use a "Ratings" system and it is amazing how mis-used it is..

Example: You and I have a disagreement about an answer.. For spite, I simply begin rating all your answers as low as possible.. What does a user see.. a very bad rating for you yet you have been giving good answers..

Just an example but I could show you exact examples of this going on right now elsewhere !!

As for the mods editing it, I would think they are busy enough as is without throwing something like that into the mix.. Heck, they may never have time to do anything else !!

Right, that's childish but I don't need convincing that it happens regularly. Perhaps that is why MishY didn't include it?

Mishy would have his own reasons, but I would suspect the anticipated abuse of the ratings system would be a good one on its own..

I am sure if you really think about it, you will come up with some yourself
The few that comes immediately to mind, is

1. theres more than one solution to most problems
2. the person would have to come back and rate - most don't come back
3. those who help have their own areas of expertise. ratings will give false overall reading.
4. some problems are solved with a combination of posts from different members.

Well thought out. I agree with 3 and 4 moreso than the other two. Good points, Dan.

If a rating system were implemented, the # of PM's for assistance from highly rated members would skyrocket.... poor Spider would probably have a conniption(sp?).

But besides that, as has already been stated, it's far too easy to abuse. This very subject is a hot topic on another forum I'm a regular on because of the amount of abuse to the system. There's people on that forum that have a higher rating than me because they have friends that bump them for every little post just because they know the person irl or whatever. Not to say I'm great or anything, but I've been there for over a year now and have finally obtained a good rating based on the quality of my posts while there's people who have been there for a month with a rating twice mine. They have a lot of and similar posts that get high ratings from friends...

I have a lot of jokes here, too. What can I say. I wouldn't want to be put ahead of others in anyway for posting funny jokes, that'd be dumb. I like that point.

Personally, I think the BEST rating anyone can get is having the "asker" come back saying you helped fix their problem !!

After all, that's what we are here for isn't it??

How would that work? Have a "Threads Resolved" counter beneath the "Posts" counter in the member's posts? That'd be interesting.

No.. just a simple "Thank you" in the thread itself.. Doesn't have to be to anyone specific as, already mentioned, there are times when the "fix" is a combined effort..

If you really feel the need to "be rated", there are a pile of sites out there giving you that option !!
