Is there really a big conspiracy by computer industry to keep us all in the dark? Sounds a bit unlikly to me.

There are many tweaks to speed up PCs.

Most PCs and their devices/drivers are initially setup just to work and not cause problems and most can be tweaked to get better performance.

e.g.
Your TCP/IP or Modem can have settings tweaked to speed up a Network
You can disable services and program to save CPU power.
You can overclock your CPU to give more speed.

Just beware that if you try to increase from the optimal then you may start having more problems.

Here (http://www.blackviper.com) is a guide for Win2K and XP users to disable unnecessary services. This will increase performance. And like Degs said there are tons of tweaks out there to further improve performance.
