NetZero Problem
I have a friend who recently purchased his first computer. He has been using NetZero as his ISP. He has encountered the following problem.
When he double clicks on the NetZero icon to log onto the internet he receives the following message: Problem Starting NetZero. Your copy of the NetZero software has been corrupted. Please reinstall the software to correct this problem. Error Code 15. When he attempts to reinstall the NetZero software from his installation CD, he receives the following message: NetZero quick startup 7.0 setup. Error opening file for writing to: C:\Program Files\NetZero. He tried uninstalling the existing NetZero program from his C drive using the "Add or Remove Programs" utility in "Control Panel" but it will not allow him to remove the program. He's also tried rebooting his computer several times and nothing seems to work. So now he's unable to log onto the internet, unable to uninstall the existing NetZero software, and unable to install a clean copy of the software. I am 99.9% certain that the NetZero software on his installation CD is not corrupted. It was only used one time when the software was originally installed. I've done some research and I think the problem may lie with another program that may be conflicting with the NetZero software. He has downloaded some programs from the web recently that he has been using. Do you have any suggestions or a process that can be used to find and correct the problem? Regards, |

Is he using Windows XP? If he is, system restore to before he downloaded the programs from the internet (also caution him against downloading stuff from the internet) once you have restored, try to install the software again. If it's not XP, well I'm guessing that it is.

Here is a link about uninstalling and reinstalling Netzero:
http://www.netzero.net/support/info/uninstall.html If uninstall will not work from Control Panel -Add/Remove, restart computer in Safe Mode and it should uninstall from Add/Remove then. There is also an article on NetZero site about corrupted files (but it is about high speed internet). http://www.netzero.net/support/errors/ea10-corrupted.html |

Thanks everyone. We worked through the problem and got it fixed! The "add/remove" did not find the NetZero program to uninstall it. We had to go in through Windows Explorer and locate the NetZero folder in Program Folders and then uninstall with the uninst.exe file. Definitely a corrupted file somewhere in the program. After the uninstall, the CD file installed like a dream.
