restart info

hello, i writing concerning a restart. i did the restart to save a change i made to my task bar to have it only appear when needed. when the computer restarted, i lost my background wallpaper, and a program for holiday lights i bought off the internet. i can still get into windows. i just that everything on my desktop is different. i have a emachine and i am running windows98. no message was posted to restart my computer. i was told to do it by a friend. i would like to get my computer back to condition before i restarted. thank you

Try this:
Boot to a DOS prompt (Start>Shut down>Restart in MSDOS Mode). At the C:\ prompt, type in scanreg /restore. Make sure to put a space between the 'scanreg' and '/'. Then hit Enter.

You'll see a few previous registries to restore from, by date. Pick one from a few days ago, and hit Enter again (or OK or whatever). Once it's done, reboot or type win to go back to Windows.
