My brother has a very old 286. It has Windows 3.1 and Word Perfect on it. He is a teacher and really needs access to the internet, but can't afford to buy a computer. (He just found out his wife is pregnant.) Until I can find him a better one, is it possible to maybe install a modem, a sound card, and update to Windows 95a? Also, will Microsoft Works 2000 work on a computer this old? I'm not sure how much RAM is on this computer, but I have some Ram that came out of a 486. Thanks for any information you can give me.

Nope.

As a history project, it's....interesting. :D

For practical purposes, you'd be better off getting, say, a used 486 at your local Salvation Army for around $15 (they have them in my area, anyway). Will save you untold hours of headaches :)

:D Hi Zip...that's what I figured. Oh well, he can just use the one he has for now. It still works great, believe it or not! :p I'll find him one sooner or later. BTW, I'm from the "deep south", too. Where can I find one of those 486s for 15 bucks?

Actually, I've got a few in my basement!

Here in Carolina, there's a 'thrift shop' called Miracle Hill. They've got loads of old stuff (PC's, monitors, add-in cards, software, etc.) for cheap. I guess 'cause nobody wants it! :D
