THE internet might be no more than a fad for many people, according to a study which shows it is not changing the way we live as radically as expected.
Virtual Society, a multinational project sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council, found that many of the social claims associated with the internet were exaggerated by the industry to promote their products.

In America almost 28 million people have stopped using the internet. In Britain there could be more than two million former users. The study said some were bored, many were frustrated by the amount of advertising, and others would not pay for internet access after leaving university. Only a third of former users expected to return to the internet later.

Sally Wyatt, a social scientist who completed the study, said it showed that the internet might not be as influential and pervasive as previously predicted. Virtual Society also found that email was not, as frequently claimed, supplanting other forms of communication, but adding to the communications overload.

I found this interesting & wonder if its true? It could be a good thing if it is. I think!!

yes I think we all know some that's tried the internet and found it wasn't there cup of tea
I also believe that some form of policing is going to take place, because we as user of the internet wont do it our selfs,Its much easier to leave it to somebody else to do it.
So if that happens, I can see a lot of people simply abandon the information highway.

W4, my brain can't adjust to that!! Hehe. Well actually, I know it's true......a lot of people do NOT live on this thing or even spend any time on it. I guess it's just hard for me to understand!

Iron, on policing the net, the only thing I'm afraid of is the US Government getting into it - if anyone has to eventually I hope it's not us (our feds, I mean). I could just picture that mess. I'm sort of mostly unaware of the "dark" part of the net, and don't know how prevalent or influential it is......Do you think it's that bad?

no harrie its no worse then it was a year ago, matter of fact a little bit better.
I used to able to get all kinds of information that is no longer available now.
But as you said I don't what our government to be the internet police, I can see how screwed up that would be,So im for us to do our own policing now.
And I don't mean buy shutting down any web sites.
What im talking about is to supervise your kids, don't let them just run lose on the internet, there is to much objectionable martial that doesn't do them any good to find or view.
I seen where a lot of people were saying that bad site was just a bunch of kids, well if it was where was the parents, why arnt they watching what there doing.
I get so tired of hearing I cant watch them all the time, well if you dont who will.

People that use the internet are far more informed than those that don't use it. Their lose, our gain. Sooner or later the technology will get to a point that it will be easy to use computers/internet and then more will use them/it, but until then...

Hi
It's not just the Internet that a lot of computer users get bored with, that is only one part of it.

I used to be an avid gamer, quake1, 2 and 3, Unreal Tornament, Half Life and so on. But now I find the Internet, my board, my web site takes up more and more of my time. The day I find any of those boring is the day the internet loses it's appeal and I will call it quits.

I cannot somehow imaging that happening, thankfully http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif I enjoy it all way too much! LOL

I agree with junky, people just dont know how to get on the net, and when they do, they dont know what to do.
When the connections get faster, it will be a lot better.
Nutrocker, i used to play games the same as you, till i started to earn my living from the internet, then it just stopped. Nothing like a good game of Unreal or HalfLife to get rid of the stress.
I think the net will become a major influence in peoples lives in the years to come.
As far as i knew the internet was getting more and more popular. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.

Very good information from you guys. I tend to agree with most of it. I work on my computer doing research so I'm on mine a lot for the money. At one time though I was spending up to 4 to 6 hours a day not doing work but playing around. I have now cut that back to about 2 hours and not every day at that. I found "I thought?" that the rest of my life was going down the tube so I had to make a change. I never did spend much time on the weekends on this tube but some.
I think for a lot of people that have a very active life that it is a fad that fades pretty fast. Hmmmm I'm going to have to do more research on that. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Not sure there!!
