new hard drive

help!my original hd is 17g w/ w2kpro as o/s.just installed a 60g hd.set it as master[set old one as slave].when prompted [w/manuf.software],i copied all of smaller disk onto larger. for some reason[one i hope you can help with],i cant format original disk.i keep getting volume in use message.can i resolve this share problem and empty old disk?
