I need basic info on connecting to a distant router. I ruled out wifi due to terrain and flora. I wish to connect to my sisters router (cat 5 imputs) which is located 700 ft. away over a ridge line and with older growth trees all the way. I have built in marval gigabit ethernet with cat 5 connection.

Is there a way I can connect the 2 with adapters and cable and if so what adapters and cable do I need (gage impediance etc.

If you know a url with this info please let me know.

Thanks

Stan

The only solution I can think of off hand is power over ethernet. This isn't anything I've played with but a google search will pull up quite a few sites on the topic. I am not seeking to power a device only to be able to reach an already active router.

My problem is how do I convert from cat 5 connections to thick net and the properties of wire I need. Of course will this work at all?
I know nothing about networking though I am researching now.

Most offices have cat 5 out of computer then thin net or twisted pair. So how is this done? Also in wans the local branch twisted pair or thin net is converted to fiber optic or thick net to reach the next group.

Why do you need to convert to thicknet if both ends are cat 5? I have run 700 feet pf cat5 before and connected to a router just fine. Of course we put it in the ground fished thru pretty heavy duty cond.

Per my reading thick net and fiber optic were the only options to go that far (700ft) with cat 5 being much less unless repeaters were used. I will basicly be stringing cable from tree to tree

My netgear switch sitting in front of me is 7.5v DC. I wonder what that low voltage yard lighting is.

I was suggesting power over cat5 as a way of getting a repeater between both locations so that you can cover that distance with cat5. I don't know about the thicknet options, but the options for fiber will be kind of expensive.

ZIP, there were some pretty cool links there. I kind of wish I had an excuse to try that as I like to tinker, but I don't.

me too. All I need is the reason, time and money. Wait a minute, the reason is what I need the least ;) My sister-in-law and her family don't live that far away. Maybe a point-to-point wireless to her house might work. But, the school might be in the way :(
