I have a DWL650 card bus for my HP laptop. All was fine til one day entire system went in the crapper. I reinstalled Windows XP PRO when it FINALLY let me do so, reinstalled the D-Link drivers, program, etc to network the laptop to main computer. Now all I get is: This device cannot start Code 12 - meaning this device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device you need to disable one or the other devices on this system. and code 10 - meaning this device cannot work because it has a problem. HELP!!! PLEASE!!
How do I free up a resource because there are NO free IRQ's. ???? At wits end, laptop about to learn to fly.

There are firmware updates for that card.
http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=9&sec=0#firmware
Pick your DWL650 model (there are 5 different ones) and flash that puppy.
Also pick up the drivers from there...they will be the latest ones available.
Also is XP updated to SP2 and all critical updates?
Also, get over to HP and flash the bios for your Notebook.

Yes, use the computer your posting here with.
Download the firmware file
download the driver
put 'em on a CD
run 'em on the poochy notebook and if they show in Device Manager without
exclamation marks or questions marks and you've rebooted, then your good to connect.

Stupid HP machines...let me get this off my chest and we'll get to fixin' you.
HP, Compaq, Gateway, and Emachine are some of the worst computers made. Everything inside is a
cheap as cheap can be. Problems like yours only come from these garbage machines and they are a
complete waste of money. I really dislike working on them because I have to spend extra time on them
that I cannot bill to the customer. Getting around HP (and the likes) goofiness is a thorn in my side and
yours. In the future if you find yourself buying a notebook...Hitachi, Sony, Dell, heck...even a ibook is
better than that other stuff.
Ok...rant out.
Can you post the exact error message word-4-word and the entire message. What we have here is the
HP notebook doesn't like the D-link card. What I normally do is put in a Netgear card into HPs instead.
Let's kick on this HP a bit before we send you back to the shop to swap cards.

THIS DEVICE CANNOT FIND ENOUGH FREE RESOURCES IT CAN USE (code 12)
IF YOU WANT TO USE THIS DEVICE, YOU WILL NEED TO DISABLE ONE OF THE OTHER DEVICES ON THIS SYSTEM.

Your video card (chip actually) and D-link are battling on the same IRQ. Sharing IRQs is not a bad
thing it's just the HP is too dumb to sort out the share.
One quick try is to plug the D-link into the other pcmcia slot and see if any changes. Remove the
driver for D-link in Device Manager first and reinstall on the bootup.
I'm going over to HP and see if they have a bios update for you. What I would like you to do is
open a command prompt (in Run... type cmd) and in the command prompt type
debug and hit enter
type d ffff:5 L 8 and hit enter...what is the date on the far right?
Type q to get out of debug.
Also I need to know your HP notebook model please.

One of those HP models has a bios flash but I'm not comfortable pointing to it if we don't have the exact model.
Download this puppy, burn to CD, and run on the HP. EVEREST Home Edition v1.51 (http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en)
See if you can get the model type in there under Computer and/or Motherboard categories.
At the very least give me the motherboard make/model and we'll see if we can go to the manufacturer's site
and grab the bios flash from them.

I did as you asked and installed Everest, damn that is a good piece of software..lol All I have about the HP is this, HP OmniBook N32N-733 and the Bios type is:
Phoenix Technologies LTD (05/22/01) GC.M1.63 but says the release date is 01/01/1992. I hope this is of some help to you..
And please note that I'll need to be held by the hand as how to flash the bios..
The Motherboard chipset is Intel 82440BX/ZX
And it's only a Mobile Intel Celeron II, 800 MHz (8 x 100)
Thanks for you help thus far...

I'll see what I can do with that info but I would prefer the model.
Can you go over the whole outside of that HP...there should be a small sticker or some raised
text on the plastic that gives those letters we're lookin' for. It's always really small text, for me
I always have to put on my reading glasses to read the itsy-bitsy words to get the model number.
It's been awhile since I opened a HP notebook (I usually refuse to do them) but you may have
to remove the battery or the hard drive cover to see the model type. Some notebooks the sticker
is under those.
Were not going to flash anything until we can verify the model, too much of a chance we might
pooch your machine altogether if we get the wrong flash file. I don't have any worries about
flashing it if I had the right model...it's a fairly simple process.
Thanks for you help thus far...
No problem grasshopper. ;)

I found the Intel motherboard but we can't use the bios flash because HP pulls the Intel bios chip
and puts in their own bios chip. It's a HP flash or no flash at all unfortunately.
Phone HP and get them to tell you the model number letters we are looking for. Tell them your
going to flash the bios and there are 4 models showing in support and two have bios flash
files and you don't want any bogus info from them.
Another unfortunate thing about HP is they may tell you the warranty is expired and they don't
want to help you unless you give them money.
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/phone_assist.html
Tell them you want two letters from them and are they willing to give you that so you can find
out what parts you need to order from them to put in your crappy notebook. (leave out the "crappy" part)

Thanks Spider for all your help. This HP isn't my laptop it's my wifes.. I personally wouldn't have one for nowt let alone pay the $100 she did from a close friend.. Every thing worked fine until there became conflicts with the video card, and the screen would go off.. Right in the middle of doing something important to.. That's when it blue screened and crashed..
This card almost worked at one point, then when I rebooted of it went again..
I have tried every trick in the book, to get this card to work.. I mean I studied computer networking at University a few years back.... I have never flashed before... woo hoo.. lol as I left that up to my business partner. I simply did all the hardware installations...
I'll give HP a try, but don't rate them very high on the helping side just like certain car mechanics.. If they're not getting paid, they become snooty and don't want to lend a hand, but if they can see you, and you're a woman and give them the slight hint of leg, or what have you.. They'll bend over backwards to help you. I know this as my wife has told me so.. And I believe her to..lol
I'll let you know how I get on, and once more I thank you for helping me.. If all else fails I'll get a very long cable and connect to the router that way..lmao

Sounds like a good idea. Your wife is right about the chity-chat support does to females...heck, you can
almost get them to send you a free computer if you ask them what color eyes they have ;)
The thing with that notebook is it was made a long time ago and the technology to get it up-2-speed with wireless is a bios
flash away. That, of course, is if we have a bios flash for your model. Look at the bright side...$100.00 is nothing and it
could have been worse like you actually paid much more for it. $100.00 to find out old machines (and HP) are nothing
but headaches and only belong in the hand of A+ certified professionals who would be one group of humans who can
deal with that lump of plastic.
If one day a buddy has a different pcmcia card you should try pumping that in and see if you can get another brand
to go on that thing. Another brand may communicate better with the brain-dead HP motherboard and this IRQ conflict
prob.
Good luck with that.

February 4th, 2005, 12:49 AM
I wish I could change brands but, my wife's main system uses a D-link router and I'm not sure if any other brands would work with it..... Though I could be wrong..:dizzy:
I've just noticed that it is a GC model, I had another look at the underside and found those letters next to a manufacturer's code..
I bet this is one of those that can't be flashed..

Your Hewlett Packard OmniBook xe3-gc drivers for Windows XP (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID=21942&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=31650&prodTypeId=321957&swEnvOID=228)
No they don't have a bios flash for that model but the video driver may be the fix. It's the video driver
fighting IRQ with the ether pcmcia. You don't have to match ether makes to routers, any brand will do
on either side. They are all built with a "standard" they all have to conform to. So you could put a Netgear
pcmcia wireless in there and connect to a D-Link router no probs.
Here's what you want to do.
Get;
HP Omnibook/Pavilion series - HP Display Settings Utility 4 Nov 2002 1.10 2.4 MB
HP DLA software update 21 Jun 2002 3.26 3.3 MB

Hitachi DK23CA-xx Hard Drive Firmware Upgrade 5 Sep 2003 A0J2 2.1 MB
Pull the pcmcia card out
remove the drivers for it from Device Manager
reboot
install Intel Pentium III SpeedStep technology support for Windows XP 25 Feb 2002 1 181 KB
reboot
install Hitachi DK23CA-xx Hard Drive Firmware Upgrade 5 Sep 2003 A0J2 2.1 MB
reboot
install Windows XP S3 Video Driver for HP Omnibook XE3-GC and Pavilion N5xxx/XHxxx-GC Series Notebook Computer 25 Feb 2002 7.90.13 3.4 MB

install HP DLA software update 21 Jun 2002 3.26 3.3 MB

reboot
install HP Omnibook/Pavilion series - HP Display Settings Utility 4 Nov 2002 1.10 2.4 MB
reboot
Then stick the pcmcia card back in and install the drivers for that (the drivers I pointed to at D-Link) then reboot.
EDITED OUT SOMETHING HERE...not necessary.

This all sounds like I'm going to be having a bit of fun...:michaelan I have saved all of your advice to Word as I have to go and be host on my wifes message board. and as it's her laptop, I'll complete the work on that later this evening..
I take it your a technician, as you're full of a lot of technical no-how, software and hardware sites that I haven't heard of before.. If I have any problems, you'll be the first to know...lol As I told the wife, "there's no way I'm taking that HP to anyone to have it repaired.. When I can get advice and do it myself, I'm confident I can do it, so why pay someone to do something I know I can do..
It's like car repairs, rather than go to a dealer or garage repair shop.. I'll get all the info and do it myself.. A little cuss here and drop of the hammer there and I'm fine..lmao Job done..
Oh there's one more thing I'd like to pick your brains on, and it's this... The fan comes on for a short spell then won't work again... The bottom of the laptop gets very hot indeed.. anything enters you mind let me know...
I tried to take it apart last week and got most of the screws out bar 4, and they were the ones under the screen at the very front of the machine.. there's no way you can get a screw driver anywhere near them.. I don't suppose you know a website that would give a schematic to this crappy model do you..
Cheers for all your help..
Dave..

You are correct sir! ;)
The fan comes on for a short spell then won't work again...
No worries there, that's what it's suppose to do. The over-drive fan kicks in when the temp reaches a certain point.
Your only hearing the over-drive fan when it kicks in and it is not the only cooling the comp has. Your fine there
it's operating the way it's suppose to.
A lot of people are using cooling pads these days.

I wish I could get a job installing systems
No you don't. Ever since the dot-bomb in 1996'ish it's just been getting progressively worse. Kids out of 4 year
BSc in computer engineering going broke on ink cartridges printing resumes and still no calls or interviews. If
anyone gets hired they pay them nothing. You can make the same money in the back of a mom-n'-pop shop
installing Windows on hard drives.
The last company I worked for I had to quit and make them hire me on contract to get them to pay me what I wanted.
One other place I had a contract with the contract lapsed and the hired an Iranian fella who was doing 9 locations
for the price of one, he got not one penny extra for taking on my systems and when I was giving him the two-week
walk through before I left he told me he already was working 6 days a week at about 12-14 hours a day.
We did the math on his income and he was making the equivalent of about $14.00 p/h. The retail chain just in
the store I worked was making over $100,000.00 per day, times that by 9 and you get about a million per day
income and the entire computer systems maintained by a large bellied old timer who never left the office and allotted
this poor Iranian fella the travel work and all the cage work.
You have to be independent today and if they don't want to sign then they can just go get someone else for peanuts
if that's what they want. They get what they pay for.
The phone company's (in my Province) high speed service is run by a guy I went to school with. He barely graduated
and they pay him peanuts for what he does. It's probably the worst ISP in this town, the connections drop and the
email machines are going down more often that a lady of the night (did I say that? ;) )
but we all know women... " I want that one" do they listen... NO
My policy on women is give them what ever they ask for, my experiences are they know exactly what they want
and can express it in clear terms. Some of my best customers are women, I get no grief from them.
Once again many thanks for all your worthy knowledge, you are most kind..
Your welcome Dave, It was a joy to work with you, your on-the-ball. Good luck with all of that.

Spider my friend,
I did every thing you asked of me, and downloaded all the drivers, rebooted every time. Guess what, yes it made no difference what so ever... At least we tried, it's better than giving the plastic pig flying lessons..lol
If I got another wireless card would I still have the same problem.....?
And if this would be the case, I think I'm going to go with the very long network cable from the lounge to the bedroom.. That way I won't be going through all this trouble..
Question...? How did it work on the other WinXP O/S. This has me thinking here.. The only obvious reason I can some up with is this, it was a newer version of XP to the one/s I have..
If I have anymore PC related questions would it be OK if I asked you, with you being in the know, so as to speak.. I really don't like putting onto people, as I don't like it done to me... Sure I'll give advice, but they are those out there whom think we're just here to serve them for free 24/7.. I'm talking about my mechanical knowledge on motorcycles and a bit on cars..
Thanks again,

To avoid this kind of antiquated XP install in the future you can "slipstream" your XP CD. Slipstreaming a XP CD
and burning a new copy will make your new CD Windows XP SP2 instead of the antiquated version you must
have in your possession right now.
I have a little tutorial with pictures here.

I had to go out and buy a network cable as I really needed to download everything from Microsoft to update my XP O/S.. Thank you for telling me to do this, it was on the fore front of my mind to do this though..
And now that SP2 is now on the crappy HP laptop, the option for a wireless wizard has now been loaded into the control panel... I think with this option the wireless card will work... I'll have to try this tomorrow as I have to host our website once more this very evening..
