Hello,

My problem involves my family’s printer and our network. In our house we have 2 computers. The computer which the printer hooked up to in my room we’ll call “Family computer” and the other, which my dad uses, ill refer to as “Work computer”

The issue is that from Family Computer, my dad usually can from Work computer when it is logged into MY account. And even then, it sometimes does not work. These two computers share a router and they both have a working internet connection.

Work computer sometimes can see this computer (Family computer) from it’s “My Network Places” and sometimes it can’t.

My question is WHY is this happening and how can I fix it? Do I need to re-establish the network altogether? Right now, my dad just printed something off successfully while the computer was logged into MY account. When the computer is in my brother’s, sister’s, or mother’s account, it won’t print. Please help!

Thanks,
Adam

Howdy:

This would be much easier if you would give the operating systems for both computers as well.. Really a VERY necessary piece of information !!

Thank you..

Disable "simple file sharing" in XP Home and share the pinter giving "Permission" to all users..

Then, make sure ALL other users on the XP Pro system are admins and NOT just users..

Also, go into the Printer setup in each user and make sure the port used to connect to the printer is exactly the same as the one listed in your user profile..

Family System: Control Panel>Folder Options>View.. Scroll to the bottom and uncheck "use simple file sharing".. Apply and okay out..

Control Panel>Printers and Faxes>.. Highlight the printer in questiom, right click and select Sharing.. Now, in there set your Permissions..

Work System.. Boot in as yourself .. now, go to Control Panel>User.. Everyone with a username on this system will be shown there.. Make sure they all say Administrators.. If not, highlight them one ata a time and change their setting from user to admin..

Now, go to Control Panel>Printers and Faxes.. Highlight and right click on the printer and select "Properties".. In the Ports area, check the port that is being used to connect the Work System to the Home System.. Now, check all other users (same directions as yours) and make sure the port is the same..
