Computer dials internet everytime some calls :-(

Hello all, I just came across this site as I was looking for help to fix this problem I'm having. My situation is as follows...I recently installed a D-Link router and created a home network. I didn't do it(I've got no clue how to) but my brother in-law did it for me. Anyways, now that it has been installed, my computer tries to dial up the internet everytime we have an incomming call and I have got no clue as to what caused it to start, or how to cahnge it back. As of now, I'm having to keep plugging, and unplugging the phone line from the computer each time I need to get on line. But this is getting really old really quick. So if there is anyone out there that can maybe provide me with a solution or atleast a starting point...I would be forever greatful Thanx's a mill!!!

HP Pavillion 754n
Windows XP Home Edition
2.54Ghz Intel Pentium 4
Agere Win Modem attached to COM3
D-Link I-604 Router
Norton Antivirus and Firewall
AOL Dial-up internet

Wait a minute...I'm not reading your original question right.

You have to shut off all "Wake Up" settings in the BIOS settings.

Start computer and right away start pressing F1 key at one second intervals till you see
the bios settings screen. There will be instructions on how to navigate around in the bios
settings right on the screen because you have no mouse and pointer in there.

Ok, so I'm in the BIOS but I do not see anything about "wakeup" settings. Here's what I do see.... At the very top it says

Phoenix AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility
Main Advanced Power Boot Exit

Under Main it has the following things that are adjustable....System Date, System Time, Select Language, Floppy Diskette A, Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave. The following things are non adjustable....Installed Memory, Memory Slot 1, Memory Slot 2, BIOS Core Version,BIOS Revision.

Next is Advanced...it has the following non adjustable things in it....CPU Type, CPU Speed, CPU Cache Ram. The Following things are adjustable....Plug And Play OS, Reset ESCD, Onboard Video Memory, Primary Video Adapter, PS/2 Mouse, Local Bus IDE Adapter, USB Legacy Mode Support, Onboard Lan, Onboard 1394, Set Superviser Password, Set User Password, I/O Device Configuration, Hardware Monitor, Onboard Audio Options.

Then there is the Power tab....Which only has After AC Power Failure.

Boot Tab....Boot-Time Diagnostic Screen, Quick Boot Mode, Boot Devise Priority.

And Last but not least Exit...Exit Saving Changes, Exit Discarding Changes, Load Optimized Defaults, Discard Changes, Save Changes.

And thats about it...Unless I'm missing something. Am I missing something?

If the Onboard Lan has a little triangle beside it » you can get the highlight on top of
that and press enter for options on that. Do you have that enter option on Onboard Lan.
A more likely candidate is I/O Device Configuration and looking for power management.
Check every enter option you can find if you didn't see those before.

Also in Control Panel (in Windows XP) there is System, Hardware(tab), Device Manager(button), and
in that list is Modem. Click the plus sign beside modem and then two-click the modem driver that shows
up and look on those tabs for something hinting to wake up.

There is nothing in the Device manager under Modem that says anything about Wakeup. I am going to check the I/O Device Config. now. See what happens with that....Thanx's again.

It's definitely a "wake up" procedure though. There are things called "initial strings" in modems.
Kind of like a internal configuration settings thing all modems have. Like to turn off the speaker
you set in extra settings in XP modem settings M=0 etc. We are probably going to get down
to that in the end...to find out what initial string your modem uses to turn off wake up on call.

Argh, finding out the initial string is not going to be easy so post your exact make and model of
modem and I'll try my best to find the manufacturer's initial string for that wake up setting. The
hard part is the Web is getting pretty sparse for finding initial string for modems in these days
of high speed.

I'd like EVEREST Home Edition v1.51 to tell us what make and model modem you have.

I don't suppose I could talk you into getting a high speed connection and dumping the modem could I?
