I've brought a friends computer to my place to try to fix some things on it. I need to have access to the internet to do some of that. I thought I could just plug in the ethernet cable to his box to make the connection. He has the same internet provider, though possibly a different cable modem model. Well, it doesn't work. I tried to rename his computer to the same as mine, and changed the workgroup, but this didn't affect anything. I can plug the ethernet cable back into my laptop and it works just fine. I'm not a total idiot in things computer like, but I think this is just outside my understanding. I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, and so on. Thank you very much.

Are you getting an IP Address?

Plug in the cable. Reset the Modem. Then goto IPCONFIG and use the Release and Renew commands.

Also check that the Network Card is set to Automatically Detect settings and that Internet Explorer connection settings are the same as yours.

Thanks for your help. I got around the problem by just plugging the ethernet cable directly into the cable modem instead of going through the wireless router. It worked just fine like that for some reason.
