Wireless Network Problem - Please Help

Hello,

We currently have 2 desktop pcs in our house. One has a 1mb internet connection and the other has no connection at all. We purchased 2 linksys 802.11b wireless USB adapters. This meant the pc which had no internet could share the 1mb used by the other pc. This worked well until the connection started to cut off. I was wondering if to fix this i needed to buy a 802.11b router and how to set it up.

Cheers,

Rick

It should work without the router if you are using internet connection sharing and the one acting as server has two network interfaces. One for the modem and one to share with. The router is a better option, however, I would not get an 11b version as it is outdated. The g, g extreme, and n are all backwards compatible and have better range than the b routers. I would at least go with the g extreme or whatever the particular brand calls it.

There is a 802.11G router. Should i go for that? The adapters are 802.11b but should work with a 802.11G router?

If it worked it shouldn't need a router. You must have a problem somewhere. So here's my questions.

How long did it work?
Did both PC's work on the net at the same time?
What is happening exactly?

Hey,

It has been working on and off, it is very unreliable and the connection is cut off a couple of times day. Yes, both pcs used the internet at the same time. Now the pcs wont talk to each other at all, they both say "excellent connection" and are both "sending" to the wireless network but not "recieving". I have checked for any firewalls which might be stopped them talk and also both adapaters are using the same channel,

hope this helps,

Cheers,
Rick

If the router is in your budget, I'd go that route. It should be more reliable, you won't need to have the 'main' PC so the other can have internet access, and as a bonus you get better security with a firewall on the router. If you get a 'g' router make sure it says it is 'b' compatible, the majority are.
