View Full Version : Personal Site? You Home Address is Out There

I was told recently that it is possible to get my full home address on the Web by using the URL for my site.

http://www.allwhois.com (http://www.allwhois.com/) is just one site that can uncover your home address. (A bit like IP tracing.) It's not a big deal with me, but all the same I'd rather that my home address was not available to anyone on the Web - that's why I don't have it on my site.

This is perhaps common knowledge to many, but it was news to me. I assume when you register a domain name it's on public record. I assume too that many would prefer their address to be out of common circulation, a bit like an ex-directory phone number.

Anybody have any knowledge of this?

Welcome :)

Email the support for who ever you bough the domainname from.
They should be able to change the details.

My Webhost will put the details under their name though I still own it.

I did query this with my hosting company and just got this reply: "This is unfortunately not something that SupaNames have any control over."

Hmmm...

And thanks for replying so quickly. Nice to be here!

http://www.nominet.org.uk/MakingChangesToYourDomainName/AboutMakingChangesToYourDomainName/

The Association may be different depending on your domain name. Nominet is for UK Domain Names.

But you will probably find that they will direct you back to the domainname company to sort out the details.

When you say Hosting Company, there maybe a difference between the Hosting Company than the Domain Name company.

You maybe able to find the details using a WhoIs search.

The bottom line is that my site is a .net and as such I "must" have my contact address available.

This is all very interesting and it looks like I wasn't paying attention when I signed up - or was this rule undisclosed?

Life's never simple - I know that much!

It may be different for .net
I've never really looked into it.

I do know that the rules for general domain names was changed a year or two ago and there was alot of fuss over the fact that contact details would be published and available.
