Ok, I have a few problems with this network im trying to setup with my pc and my laptop.
Firstly, My Laptop can see my desktop PC and itself in workgroup places but cannot access my PC.
My PC cant see anything in the work group (when i click on view workgroup computers, it says its not accessable, you may not have permission.)
Also my laptop cannot access the internet.
1 last thing, whats the difference between a crossover and a patch cable? and how can i tell?
My PC is using a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
My Laptop is a Latitude D600 using a Broadcom 570x Gigabit Intergraded Controller 2
(plz ask for more info if you need it, I dont know what info to post right now)
Thanks for your time/help :D

1st the difference between a crossover and a patch cable. A crossover cable have some wires 'crossed over', so that one computer can be directly connected to another computer. A patch cable is used to connect a computer to a router, wall jack, etc..
If you are seeing both machines on your laptop, you have the correct cable.
What versions of windows are you running and how are the machines networked?
Are they connected directly to each other and you plan to use some internet sharing software or do they connect to a router?
Do you have any firewalls running? If so are they configured to allow sharing?

Firstly I would like to say thanks for the quick response :D
Both machines are on XP PRO (SP2)
They are both connected directly to each other (no router or anything like that)
I have a PC cillin firewall on my desktop pc, and I just changed the settings from high to medium. (now i can see the files on my desktop from the lappy)
Still no internet tho..

So are you wanting to use Internet Connection Sharing through the Desktop?
You need to goto Network Properties and on the connection choose to allow ICS.

Its turned on already...
right now, my PC can't access my laptop but my laptop can access my pc and take files etc.

Still no net.
Thanks for helping :D

Auto Protect is the Anti Virus part.
You need to disable the Firewall part.

Are you sure you have Norton Personal Firewall?
The error may not matter in this case.
Do you have the Guest Account enabled on the Laptop?
Carcass

Is there a same user account on both?
Carcass

If you have toa ask you most likely haven't changed it, so it is enabled. Open 'My Computer'. Selecet 'Folder Options..' fromt the 'Tools' menu. Select 'View' and scroll to the bottom of the list. Make sure 'Use Simple File sharing' is selected.
