Whole house wired cat5e, 8 port switch and patch panel in closet. Three pc's and 1 laptop all running XP (main one which is gateway is XP Pro svpk2).

Have ICS running on Gateway (Starband is ISP). Crossover cable going to Switch, straight everywhere else.

Can hook up laptop to any connection and it connects fine ...surfs fine.

2 of those pc's are brand new Compaqs ...one can connect fine to internet, other one (daughters) is giving us a run for our money.

Both had Norton Security Center ---that has been UNINSTALLED on both. Daughters says it connects but it's not ..cannot ping anything ..not even gateway ..says Host not found.

Restored daughters pc to moment we brought it home, uninstalled all the crap they put on it again and connect ...same thing!

Both of those pc's are identical ..built in nics ..but not getting anywhere with duaghters. Can plug laptop into same outlet and no problem!

Ideas?

Cable? NIC? Try replacing the cable. Try a usb to ethernet adapter and see if that works.... (or another NIC if you have one lying around).

Did that already ...even deleted the nic on the machine and had Windows rerecognize it. Tried several cables prior to that also. I ended up taking the PC back to the store (only 3 days old) ...will try new one tonight. Hopefully that's all it was.

Why dont you turn off ICS and install a Router. make sure all pc's are set with the same subnet mask and set the gateway to the routers IP address, set the DNS to the same as the gateway address
then tpye "ipconfig /flushdns" in a DOS window followed by "route-f"
that should do it

Starband and Direcpc are about a pain to network so don't feel bad. You have actually gotten alot farther than most do so pat yourself on the back. Satalite connections are pretty picky so just make sure on your daughters computer that there are no firewalls running for now "just so we can get connection goin". Go into her LAN settings and set her up with a static ip "I'm sure you know this already just covering our steps" make sure the gateway is correct also the dns, subnet need to be correct. If all those steps are taken and still no joy you might want to try putting a NIC in her computer and turning off the onboard NIC see what ya get then. Post back and let us know how its going.

Does your daughter's PC show an IP address at all (from cmd window run, ipconfig /all)?
If its connecting through ICS it should have an IP address something like 192.168.0.x. The LAN interface on the gateway should be 192.168.0.1 (it gets set to than when you enable ICS). The gateway should act as the DHCP server for the LAN and serve up IPs on the correct subnet.

See what you have for an IP and let us know.
