I'm not exactly sure whats wrong but I happened to notice my icons are not displaying properly. The small icons next to the start menu are either not there or pieces of them are there, some have white lines through them its the same way on the Start menu. I have a screen cap of it here...

For some reason when I saved this and uploaded it, it shrank the image but you can still see where the icons are missing and in pieces and most have white lines through them.

What could be the problem and how can I fix it? Thank you SOOO much!

Hi starjan

Try this, In the C:\Windows folder locate the "ShellIconCache" file and delete it.
Windows will rebuild the icons when you restart the computer.

ShellIconCache is a hidden file. To unhide it, in Explorer click
Tools/Folder Options and View. Dot the button beside "Show hidden files and folders"
and click Apply.

I did exactly what you said and it didn't work. What else can I try?

If the problem started in the last 5 days you could try a
registry restore.
Click Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ MS-DOS Prompt
At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type scanreg /restore
and press Enter
Note the space between the g and /

Registry Checker will ask, Would you like to continue?
Click YES

Select a date before the problem started and click OK

I did what you said but it didn't work like your instructions said. I went to Start>Programs>Accessories>MS DOS Prompt

I typed scanreg \restore

This is what came up:

C:\WINDOWS>scanreg \restore
Windows Registry Checker
Usage: SCANREG [/<option>]
<option>
? : Displays usage.
BACKUP : Backup the registry and related system configuration files.
RESTORE : Choose a backup to restore.
FIX : Repair the registry.
COMMENT="<comment>"
: Adds the specified comment to the CAB file while backing up

None of the other things you said would happen did. It didn't ask if I wanted to continue and it didn't ask me to choose a date.

I typed scanreg \restore

It should be scanreg /restore

Ok now that I typed in scanreg /restore the next prompt is "C: WINDOWS" so I typed in Date and it asked what date and I put the 8th and then it comes up "C: WINDOWS" again. What do I type now?

You should have recieved the Registry Checker window.
So there must be problems other than the icons.

I would go here and do an online virus scan.
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

I would also install and run "Spybot Search and Destroy" (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html) and "Ad-Aware" (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
Remove any objects they find.
Be sure and update both before running.
