View Full Version : Windows Exception on Bootup

Working at re-installing Win98SE on a friend's computer. Fails to install properly (windows exception). Can only boot in safe mode.

bootlog.txt looks ok down to dynamic loading of vdhcp.

Dynamic load device vdhcp.386 [xxxxxxxx]
Dynamic init device VDHCP [xxxxxxxx]

But is cutoff at that point, leaving vdhcp uninititalized & not loaded. Also, obviously, subsequent steps not executed resulting in aborted boot.

Any one care to explain what's going on? As an additional imponderable, I shouldn't think that anything to do with DHCP would cause a fatal error in the OS. My misunderstanding or what gives?

Welcome :)

Can you give more info.

Did you format before the install?
Did the Install complete?

q: Format before install?
a: No, I'm saving the reformat/install process for when
I give up hope of repairing the existing install. Maybe reeeeeeaaaaaaalllllll soon! ;-)

q: Re-install complete.
a: Not completely. Windows exception first occurred on re-boot where Windows claims it's about to run for the first time and then went off to install system drivers.

Now it just generates the exception error unless I bring it up in safemode. The bootlog data comes from stepping through the boot process and as shown indicates the system is de-railed while attempting to properly initialize the vdhcp service.

I'm hoping for a bit more about the specifics of what vdhcp is exspecting and how to configure windows (in safemode) accordingly to let it initialize.

DCHP is a networking protocol and shouldn't stop a boot.

In Safemode go into Device Manager and see if any drivers need installing.

Sorry for leaving you hanging. Weekend got busy with other things.

Thanks for the suggestions. Couldn't find anything amiss under system.
Wound-up tired of fiddling with the problem so I just renamed the windows directory and did a new install. A hassle chasing down & re-installing drivers but at least I know what's what.

Thanks again.
