I have a system here that the keyboards doesn't work in Win2k, but instead gives a system beep on any key press. It works fine on the logon screen typing in a user name and password.

Changed keyboards and even tried a USB one.

Any keyboard works fine in any LiveCD OS such as Slax, Mandrake Move and Barts PE etc

In my experience the system beeps on keyboard presses was a running out of RAM back on those old DOS based OS's like Win98.
There is still ~86MB free physically memory though.

Any idea's ??

Ok ihave narrowed it down to some sort fo user setting.

I noticed by hitting a key continuously it didn't start beeping until the screen read
"Apply personal settings"

So i created a new account and logged into that. This new account see's the keyboard working fine.

Now to find what it is because the account with the issue is "Administrator"

Well I guess the first place to look is under Keyboard control panel as Administrator.
There's a Trobleshooter under hardware but I'm wondering if it's an input locales setting. Can't imagine what would cause a invalid key error beep tone on ANY keypress though :

Yeah i snooped around there but everything looks right.

I guess it must be a tough one based on the amount of responses i have had ;)

Can you just clarify... this is definitely system beep, not soundcard tone and the keypress doesn't actually work or is it a case of every working keypress is accompanied by annoying noise

I can't replicate yet but is it a Filter Keys setting (in Accessibility option)?
