View Full Version : Where does jello come from?

Where does jello come from? The Chicago Tribune of March 5th, 1997 finally answers the question thus:
Gelatin seems benign enough. And in fact it is. It's nothing but molecules of protein that have been heated and then, as they cool, trap tiny particles of water. But where does that protein come from? The rumors are always spoken of in hushed terms: that Jell-O is made of horse hooves... or worse.
Actually the truth is worse. Or at least it sounds worse. The source of the protein in Jell-O is "hide trimmings," animal tissue that is rendered, purified, filtered, and then purified again, leaving a protein called collagen.

Of course, then they have to go and ruin their exposition with gratitous veggie-bashing:
The gelatin that is the building block of Jell-O is so purified that the FDA doesn't regard it as a meat product. Likewise, all but the strictest vegetarians find Jell-O acceptable.
Gee, thanks. What does the FDA know, anyway?

Hey dont yell at me I dont eat the stuff!!!
this was the good version I found.

Got news for you Irons.....when I worked at M&M Mars....I had to make the mixture for the Starbursts.....and guess what, they're right. Cows and horses hooves. It came in a powder form, and if you stuck your arm into it and then pulled it out, the gelatin would cling to your arm like static electricity. It was weird. I can't remember what the other two ingrediants were that went in to the first procees batch...I'll have to ask my husband and get back to you...

Why do you think they tell you to ingest gelatin tablets to get your fingernails to grow! http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

By the way, do you like Starburst? hehe

I was watching some program the other night where school kids were making different recipes on how to fix bugs, such as the grub worms, cockroaches, crickets and some others. Thought I would gag watching them. Cooking was bad enough but then when they ate them. No thank you.

ok I`m a bit ignorant here, what is jello?
Is it what we call jelly here, where you break it into cubes and add hot water.
We have what you call starburst as well but they used to be called Opal Fruits. I don`t know why they changed the name. And talking of name changes, why did they change our Marathon bars into Snickers, doesn`t make sense.

Kimmygem

That's what it's called here in the states. It always has been....and it's very possible that your snickers isn't the same as our snickers....Your Mars bar here is a MilkyWay....strange huh? At least, last I heard it was. They give them different names because of the appeal to different cultures. I noticed y'all call a lot of candies and small foods "gems"....is that why? cause they're small?

ah sounds like the same stuff, great with cream on top of it but if it`s made with what you said I `might be having second thoughts.
Another one they changed the name of not so long ago was Oil of Ulay to Oil of Olay, why go to all that expense

Kimmygem
December 9th, 2000, 03:03 AM
I don't really know why...it's always been called Oil of Olay here. Unless they're just trying to "bring us all together"....beats me!

What do you call the brown bag you put groceries in?

Most stores now use plastic bags.

We call them carrier bags here.
I did notice in american films that your brown bags had no handles on them and everybody seemed to be struggling with them.
We`ve always had handles on our bags http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ironside,
I didn't know if anyplace else called them a poke..

I had never heard of them called that till I moved out here.. The first time I went up to the little corner store, I bought a loaf of bread..The guy there asked me if I wanted a POKE?? I of course said NO> but after time I came to realize what a Poke was... http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

There was a food store in Jersey that came out with bags with the handles.. they were great.. so great that people were taking them by the handfulls. So they of course went back to the bags with no handles.
