Some, but not all files cannot be opened after an upgrade from W98 to W2kpro.
I did not switch to NTFS. Corrupt files include Word docs, Excel Docs, and jpegs, and my Quicken data!!. - For example, in a folder with 20 jpegs, 3 will be openable using any viewer (Intenet Explorer, Jasc Paint Shop, etc), but the rest are unopenable.
Any clues? Is this some form of FAT corruption? How can I recover the files, jpegs in particular?

Welcome :)

You could try an error check on the drive.

Thanks! That Disk Investigator is a nicely enhanced hexdump program.
Unfortunately, it revealed that all corrupted files were kept the proper size, just filled with all ones. Bummer. Still don't know what caused it.

Number one lesson (only the billionth time I've learned it):
Backup data before trusting Microsquash programs!
