I'm trying to do a clean install, get rid of WinXP and get Win98 on there.
I load the machine with the boot disk in place,

Diagnostic tools loaded successfuly to Drive C:

great, now i start FDISK choose large drive support, etc. First I check the partition info - Current fixed disk drive: 1, Partition: 1, Type: NTFS.

I go back to the FDISK menu and choose "Delete primary DOS partition" then I get: No Primary DOS partition to delete.
I go back to the menu and choose to "Create Primary DOS Partition", but I get another message: No space to create DOS Partition.

I figure maybe I can skip this partition thing and carry on to formatting; so at the DOS prompt:

A:\>Format C:

but then I get this:

Format not supported on drive C:
Format terminated.

So what do I do now?

I have this 'Quick Restore' CD which came with another Compaq pc I own (although its an entirely different model).

What if I used that to format the hard drive, but I'm not sure if it'd work.

FDISK can have problems with non FAT drives such as NTFS.

Go with the Restore CD you have.
If that doesn't work then goto the HDD Manufacturers site and use their disk tools to format the drive.

Howdy:

When you use the Win98 floppy to boot to fdisk, use the option to "Remove all non-fat partitions" first.. This is the NTFS partition..

Once that is done, you can then use fdisk to create a Primary DOS partition (say yes to all questions) and then format that partition and install Win98..

Restore CD didn't work (QuickRestore does not support this system). But I followed Murray's suggestion and was able to format & install Win98 without any problems.
Its certainly nice to see the Win98 splash screen again.
Cheers for the help fellas!!
