edit analog video

Hello,
I am thinking about editing and uploading a 5 minute video clip from my home movies on my analog cam.to my website.
Are there any tutorials or instructions on how to accomplish this, mind you that i have never attemted to edit video or audio in my life? or if you guys have any pointers, any help is appreciated.
i would like have smallest file size and how to compress it for bandwidth and which movie format would give adequate quality, which video player type should be picked for viewers to view on etc?
Are there any free or inexpensive editing softwares for bigginers?
Syed

analog cam doesn't say much. what outputs does it have, etc?

how do you plan this, via a pci card, you have a cable, external devices...etc.

there's a million ways to do this as there are a million companies that made the crossover from analog to digital with their own products, formats, connectors, etc.

decide:
what kind of analog device do I have?
what digital format am I trying to get to?
how much am I going to spend on this?

then do some basic google searches to find the product that's right for you.
ie. I typed in 'analog to digital video' for reference.
