I recently lost the ability to connect to the internet.
Trying to make a new connection, I got to the wizard screen that names the connection, but was told the name, regardless of what it was, was not valid.
Re-installed 2000 Pro twice, but to no avail.
BTW, I checked the HD for bugs, but none showed up using today's latest virus file update.
I've never had this problem before. What can I do?

What are the hardware specs for your connection? Is it dial-up, DSL, Cable?

It's a dial-up. I have another machine, running XP, and it has no problem.
I've used the slower machine with 2000 Pro for almost a year on this dial-up, and never had trouble.
I recently installed AVG anti-virus program, and things have not been the same since. I had to re-install 2K, upgraded the file system to NTFS, wiped out the 98 system under it, and then could not find the dialer, which had been there before the file system upgrade. (I have since un-installed AVG, but that did not fix the problem.)
Ended up re-installing 2K, and had to try about five or six times to get it done. But the internet wizard cannot get past the connection name dialogue. it just says it's not a valid name, no matter what the name is.

Ended up re-installing 2K, and had to try about five or six times to get it done. Can you be more detailed? I'm getting the feeling that you may have a faulty install. Also check your event logs (found under admin tools in control panel) for errors. That might help track down the problem.
