Hi all, I just recently formatted a computer that was given to me for free but it had Win95 Let me say this I'm a complete newbie so could you please bear with me. OK so I formatted this computer to try and install WinME but I'm not sure what I need . I guess the format c: erased everything and I thought I could just insert the WinME CD and install but no luck. If somebody could possibly help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You chris j. :dizzy:

Welcome :)
If the CD isn't booting then check in the BIOS that it is set to boot from CD.
To get into the BIOS see the instructions on screen when you turn on the PC or read the manual.
It's usually DEL or F1 etc.
If that doesn't work then you can boot from a WinME floppy
Post back if you need instructions for that.

Depending on what version of ME, the CD may not be bootable.
ME-OEM is bootable
ME - Full Version requires a boot floppy
The easiest way is to use a Windows ME boot disk, Go HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm), download the file Windows ME Custom, No Ramdrive.
Do not download it directly to the floppy, download it to your hard drive or desktop.
Once downloaded double click on the file, a window will open, have a clean formatted floppy in the floppy drive, follow the instructions, it will extract the boot files to the floppy.
Now boot the computer from this floppy (computer must be configured to boot from a floppy as the first boot device) - Degsy shows you how. It may already be set that one. Once you boot with the boot floppy, watch the screen it will assign a drive letter to your cdrom, probably "R" but could be different. So lets say it is "R" , you will end up at the A:/> prompt, now put the Windows ME CD in, then at the A:/> prompt type the following:
r: (hit <enter>) (substitute "R" for the drive letter assigned to your cdrom)
setup (hit<enter>)

Hi,
In addition to what Murf said when you are booting from the Boot Floppy you will need to choose the option for booting with CDROM support, otherwise you will not be able to access the CDROM drive.
