You will need to purchase the Operating System CD and then format and install.

When you have the CD you can boot from it and it will start the setup.
During the setup you will be able to do the formatting.

Go to www.bootdisk.com. You may find a boot disk that will boot your system and let you reset the passsword.

Reformat

How much does it normally cost to reformat and add a new operating system? Is it hard to do?

Can a person that don't have much knowledge of a computer do it?

The only cost will be purchasing the OS CD.

If you are starting from scratch then it can be any OS such as Win98, ME, 2000, XP

What is this bootable disk I keep hearing about?I don't have and software that came with the computer.

I wonder if I can use the software that came with my DELL it has XP but I don't know which one to use.

But if I reformat my old one I can load it back with what ever I prefer?

I wished I knew what the bootable disk I'm supposed to use.

Ain't nothing like having your hands tied when you need to get something done.

A boot disk won't help you in this case.

No, it is most probably setup for the Dell PC
and it would be against the term & conditions

Yes.
You need to purchase an Operating System CD.
From there you can format and install your new OS.

So all I need to do is to go get me like windows 98,or XP I don't really care too much for ME,the wife had that on her computer at work and it casued her a lot of problems.

I don't need anything else?

I'm not sure that this old computer could handle XP don't your computer have a lot of speed or be a pretty good computer to handle XP?

I like XP as well as 98. I don't think I need 2000 professional for just playing around with the computer.

Any suggestions?

What are the system spec's? CPU speed how much RAM ? Depending on those you could run anything from XP to Win2k, or maybe have to go with 98SE "shudders".

Os

You know I'm not really sure, all I know it's 500mhz.That's all the information he gave me when I bought it.

I would imagine XP Home Edition would be pretty expensive.

You could run XP home or Pro on 500mhz, but I would put as much RAM in that computer as it will hold. XP isn't all that bad you can find good deals on ebay and also check into student/teacher ed's if you happen to have a child in school this could be the way to go.

Windows 98 versus 2000

If I wanted to install windows 98 do I have to completely get rid of windows 2000 first?or can I just install windows 98?
Which is really better 98 or 2000? For I don't understand the difference between them other than I know 98 is a little easier for me.

I would recommend 2000 over 98, but it depends on what you do with your PC and more importantly what CD's you have.

If you want to install 98 you are best to format the drive.
