Problem with sound device with wmp.

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

Is what i get every time i try to listen to a cd or watch a video.. I tried downloading direct X from microsoft but i still get the same error, can someone identify my problem?

If you use device manager and look for your sound device does it show up as working correctly or having problems?
