A zipped file is a compressed file which means it compresses the file or folder to make it smaller. It allows user (computers) to send files in smaller amounts for example I have a 6.23 MB file and I compress it to 5.76MB it will be easier to transfer through email to a friends email account. Big Software Companies most of the time compress their files because they are so large.

Btw there are other compressed formats like rar,pae,7-zip,bh(black hole),lha, and lot more with all kinds of capabilities.Ofcourse u need a certain program to create a compressed file. Most popular are Winzip and Winrar but i duggest Powerarchiver to compress and extract files http://cybertechhelp.com/forums/images/smilies/satan.gif(search google)
