Press Ctrl - Alt - Del keys at the same time to bring up the Windows Task Manager. From there you can look at running applications, processes, performance, networking, and users. That should give you an idea to start from.
Take a look in the tray down by your clock (lower right). Those icons represent some running programs/apps.
In the Run box type in msconfig and press <enter>, take a look at the Startup tab. That stuff is all running at startup, as well.

Good work, zip. :)
Wee AB, run a defrag on your drive(s) regularly to help the system locate it's resources quicker.
