Hello to all:

Some back ground info first:
I was play a cd in the cd drive and the computer just rebooted for an unknown reason. OK, comes back with "windows was not shut properly....checking disk for errors", I let it check and it came back no errors, however as it looked like windows was going to load it rebooted again, this time at the "push f8 for advaned options" screen, windows indicated that the file:
winnt\sys32\ntoskrnl.exe was missing or corrupt. After approx. 20 min of trying to get it to boot through various methods I have been able to get it up. Now when I was at the windows desk top I recieved two more errors that read something like this:

The procedure entry point ?setbuf?$basic_streambuf@DU?$char_traits@D@std@std @@@MAEPA12@PADH@Z
could not be located in the dynimic link library MSVCP71.dll

and

The procedure entry point ?setstate?$basic_ios@DU?$char_traits@D@std@std@@QA EXH@Z
could not be located in the dynimic link library MSVCP71.dll

My two questions are, I did check to see if it was there and it was so it may be corrupt, but can I obtain a new ntoskrnl.exe file, and can I obtain or fix the MSVCP71.dll file?

I should also mention that about two weeks ago I installed a new slave HDD and about 3 days ago I installed a new slave DVD drive. I have not had a problem with either of these items yet, however since my errors the new HDD will not show up.

Hello and welcome to CTH,
You should be able to use the Windows 2k cd to fix both issues. Just boot from the cd and let it do it's thing. When asked what you want to do install or repair ect..move to repair and hit enter. Follow the screen commands it will tell you what to do. Replace the old broken files with the new make sure you use the correct full path to the files on the cd. If I;m not mistaken most of the system files on the cd are under in system32 dllcache. Good luck hope this helps, if you need more of a step by step of how to do this post back and I or someone can walk you thru it.

Thank you for the info badwayz, I tried it out and everything seems to working just fine. Did a scan for Spyware as well as virus and aside from a few tracking cookies, all is well. I will monitor things for the next couple days to be sure, but once again thank you for tips, it is greatly appreciated.
