I recorded notes on ipaq 1710 and saved them on hard drive of pc, then deleted the originals. The saved files are something to do with Outlook, with a .msg extension. How can I convert them to MP3 or WAV?

Welcome :)
I would assume that MSG would refer to a Outlook Mail Message.
It could be that the sound file is embedded within the message.
You would have to open the message and extract it.

no they aren't in an email message - I think what happened is I moved them from my docs on ipaq to the sd card, to save memory - this action seems to have converted them from WAV files to MSG files but I can't do anything with them, like open them - all I can do is click on them so they play, but I want to burn a CD so they need to be converted to audio files of some sort. Don't know if this helpful!

Have you tried just changing the extension?

just in case anyone's interested, my .msg files have now been made into WAV files by using a hex editor (clever friend did this, not me!)
