Since posting my original message, I remembered Paint Shop Pro has a screen capture option. I don 't know how to delete this. My apologies.

You don't have to delete the post. :)

I have Paint Shop Pro and knew it had screen capture options but didn't know it could capture movie stills. Thanks for posting back.

It's also good to keep the thread because other users find this thread through search engine
searches and Cyber Tech Help searches when they are looking for a solution to the exact same problem.
Also many users do not have Paint Shop Pro as a solution.

Here is how to deal with black/blank screen captures on video/movie/clip screen captures/screen snap

Right-click My computer (System in Control Panel) and left-click Properties
Advanced(tab)
Performance - Settings(button)
Advanced(tab)
under Processor scheduling switch Background services to Programs

You will then be able to snap a frame from a video and capture it. Once your done with the
capturing though, switch back to Background services so the machine is faster in it's general
operations.

In Windows 2000 it's
Right-click My computer (System in Control Panel) and left-click Properties
Advanced(tab)
Performance Options...(button)
then you switch between Applications and Background services

If you're on XP Windows Movie Maker will let you grab stills too.
