help me please!
i tried to install xp on a computer. this version of xp has worked on several computers. on this particular computer, it will install all the way to 4 minutes and restart the entire process over again. i have tried making fresh copies of the disc, including using dvd x rescue to obtain the freshest copy of the disc, all to no avail. i hastily installed xp before checking the brand of computer or type of hard drive. please help.

Hi ghosdawg
Welcome to CTH
What was installed on this computer before? Have you cleaned off the hard drive before you attempted the install?
Often it is a good idea to blow away the partition table and put a new one in place before you start. And depending what type of installation was previously on the computer before will determine how to do that, but there is a multi-purpose partition removing tool available called Delpart (http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm). After removing the partition with Delpart, you should install a new partition table using Fdisk, format the drive and do your installation.
Good luck. BF

thanks for your reply. xp was previously installed on the machine. as i said, i was pretty hasty with the installation. instead of trying to remove the viruses, i decided to go with a clean install. the computer was given to me, primarily because of the slow acting nature of it. mc afee discovered several viruses, so i went with the install. i will try what you suggested and respond in kind. thanks again.

sounds like you are using an illegal copy of xp since you installed that copy on several computers and using burnt versions. It is against the rules of this forum to help.

it's ok to assume, but since you are such a smarty-pants, i'm sure you know that corporate versions allow many installs. if you had a job, you would know that, renegade. and since i've been helped, what you wasted time to post is quite irreleveant

Having a VLM key does not give you the right to copy that disk itself but rather the right to install the contents of said disk on multiple computers.

Has this thread become something of piracy issues? What happened to helping the guy? He cannot sell or lend the discs he made to others, only for private use... consider installing xp on 100 comps, it would be stupid to go on each comp put XP on and move on to the next, smarter and faster to create a few disks and install simutaeneously, then dispose of the said discs afterwards... come to think of it what a waste of cds...

thank you, chingy. sometimes these guys can be a little controlling in their little cyber world. especially when the responses aren't even coming from the moderator. i have done nothing illegal, nothing wrong. copying is illegal only when some sort of css pretection has been broken down. let he who has never photocopied or copied music or recorded the superbowl and played it back amongst friends or made an audio cassette cast the first stone. as it stands, the process renegade explained worked beautifully. thank you renegade. please leave your personal thoughts, morals, and sense of ethics outside of the support forums.

please leave your personal thoughts, morals, and sense of ethics outside of the support forums. We'll take you at your word unless we believe otherwise. Just to clarify, since you're new here renegade was making sure you understood that we strictly enforce the TOS regarding piracy. Please don't take it... or make it... personal.

I'm the moderator, fanboy. What you're doing is illegal - makes no difference if anyone believes it or not, or if I like it or not. That's just the law. You agreed to that law the first time you installed Microsoft Windows. You can't make a copy. That's called 'pirating', and we can't help with pirated software. That's the rules of the owner of this site.
Take care.

you can make a copy if you have a license

well, until you quote specific references, then it is your opinion. and depending on where you get your quote, it will still be opinion. moderator doesn't mean anything. if you were, then you could cancel this entire thread... but then again, if you were the moderator, i suspect you wouldn't be so busy with this...
chingy, it's the darndest thing. i even switched hard drives. i even tried installing windows 2000, which worked, then installing xp using the upgrade option: same result... i do kmow that some motherboards, such as hp, compaq, any dell cpu, will not allow a different install disc other than the one that it came with, but i am quite sure this is a clone

Sorry dude the only thing i can thnk of is somefing to do wif the mb and its components...
Try installing Xp on another comp and move the Hdd over the the one wif the prob
just run the recovery console to fix boot up probs
test your CPU, RAM vid card on other comps,
hmmmm as for having a license thats what we learned at school some time ago...
if you bought a license from microsoft you can make copies. ITs like a contract.
What about if you lose your copy of XP, or even more crazier, pinaccle video editing that costs like $1000, should you call up? theyll prolly answer with no, piracy issues and ask you to buy another copy... thus they make more money... a backup copy is wise here... piracy laws both respect the composer and also make mroe money for em, resulting in the consumer being very poor...
is there a place to discuss issues of piracy and copyright, the pros and cons to consumers and composers... i feel hyped up now...
