Will Cds ever go out... Will they cease to exist?
The floppy disk is becoming obselete and will eventually die, will the CD suffer the same fate?
Will CD support on optical drives be still available after 100-20 yrs?
Plz discuss, it is part of the planning cycle of a very big project concernign up to 500 ppl...

The idea of an optical disk will be around for years to come, although CD's are becoming nearing obsolete as we speak. DVD's are taking over, and research is being done on mass producing holographic versatile disks to replace DVD's, which will hold much, much more data than a DVD, and should be able to exceed dual-layers on each side of a single disk. Did I mention, from what I've been reading, they might even end up being perfectly clear? :D

hmmm well for a project... ok a high school year book, we had 3 main ideas... a traditional style year book, a Digital yearbook or a cross between the two. If the last two options were chosen, what storage media would be recommended. We are thinkgin that students will keep such yearbook for over 10 years, thus the idea about CDs being non existent came to mind...
Also is there a way of changint the title of this thread?
Add-on
Ive also read about other media... Blu Ray discs can hold way more than DVDs and also, i think they are called High Density DVD, not sure, but yeah better storage, they are both optical and drives are backwards compatible with CDs... In 10 yrs time, wonder if CDs can still be accessed... Will a CD burnt today last that long anyways?

Only mods can change thread titles, you may have to PM MishY or a mod from this forum.
I suggest using DVD's. Most everyone nowadays has (or knows someone who has) a DVD player and DVD's will be around for a long time. I promise.
We're not looking at HVD's in stores anytime before 2007 at the earliest. At the same size as a CD or DVD, they are capable of storing well over a terabyte of data, which is more than we can say for any other kind of storage media similar in size.

hmm but for a year book... DVD... seems like a waste of a DVD...
The digital part of a year book, would be either a full digital year book where even then a DVD would still be too much storage... and will seem like a waste
or the digital side will be part of a Year book set, (Book and a CD/DVD)
Flash drives and Flash Media are out of the question.. to expensive...
would a CD/DVD even last 10 years?
It would contain, for now... Photos and infor about students, Movies retireve over years, and music clips from the school band...
Id say 500 photos, 500 blocks of text, max 300 charas each, 10-20 movie clips ranging from 30 sec to 1hr, music about 10 mp3s about 5 mins each

As everything seems to get smaller and better I would expect the next advance to be mini-DVDs . Like mini-disks that are around now but with 10-20 [or even more] times the storage. And naturally cost us all a packet. :(

@ dahli
I think Chingy is asking will CD/DVD disks have a shelf-life of 10 years.
@ everyone in general
That is a hard question, because the CD/DVD data layer contains dye
which over time degrades. While CD/DVD's have been here for 10 years,
CD's mainly manufactured in 1996-2001 have an expected shelf life of
5 to 10 years. As dye technology has been increasing, the shelf life
also has been increasing. I think that going with DVD-R recordable disks
is a good idea, provided they are a name brand like TDK or Verbatim. These
companies have run tests on their disks, and published their results. For
example, TDK disks expect a 70 year shelf life. See Here for TDK results (http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technology/CD-R/Media/TDK_Fig3.html)
Shelf life for a un-recorded disk is said to be about 5-10 years. I found an interesting site about CD quality. You may find it useful.

Hope that helps

I have the Moody Blues cd "Legend of a Band" released in 1990 - still play it now and still sounds great. That means that it is going into year 15 - so like I said the CD have been around for over 10 years.

Will CDs ever go out?
When was the last vinyl record made. Nothing lasts forever.
33 1/3, 45's, 78's....these numbers mean nothing to young people and will eventually be out of our vocabulary, along with record player/turntable.
(actually many people still collect/sell/buy these old records)
FYI. How many grooves were in each of these groups of records?
scroll
One. Continuous from outside to inside. ;)

I believe cds are on their way out. give them 10 more years - at the max. When walmart quits selling them, then they are gone.

CDs are definately in the fast lane out of our minds forever. But Floppies? No... I think floppies will be around for a while, until they make a new design for them allowing them to store more (Kind of like the Zip drives were supposed to be). With the floppies being so much better for Booting off of than CD's or DVD's I foresee them outlasting the CD's...
