Hey guys, my friend asked me to help him make a third computer so did everything, put the PC on installed devices, windows, everything was fine until my most hated part came and the nightmare began..

When i tried setting up his ethernet connection it just wouldnt detect an IP. The other 2 computers worked perfectly fine so i tried copying the settins from the other and just changin gthe last ip number, the connection then connected however it did not display any webpages...

I think this is a problem with the DHCP but im not sure, i dont know much about this stuff sadly, any help is appreciated i wasted so much time with that :/

Thanks in advance for all replies.

more info:
Connection Cable
Router = 4 ports, 2 pcs connected already working (ironic i setup ne of them and everything went fine)
PC has a ethernet card integatrrated on the mobo and it works fine according to windows XP home edition.
TCP/IP protocols are enabled and set to automatically obtain ip and dns (like the other 2 pcs), together with file sharing and this other one are enabled too :p
the ethernet card seems good and the light on the router to pc is good too.

First thing you should look for is to make sure the hardware is operating within normal parameters. Open up your device manager and make sure the network adaptor does not have an exclamation mark on it.

Does the computer recognize when a network cable is plugged in?

My friend just did it and windows said:

"A network cable has been unplugged" but doesn't say anything when its plugged...

Im no professional or anything but my next step was to try buying an ormal ethernet card, you think i should do that? would blow $30 without knowing if that would fix this.. :x

Well, that doesn't guarantee that the NIC is bad. Try using a different cable and a different port in the router. If varying your connection doesn't work, the NIC is probably bad.

Well my best bet is that it is the stupid motherboard ethernet crap.. i bought a motherboard like that for my brothers ocomptuer and i ended up buying him a linksys ethernet card in the end and it worked... is somethign with onboard ethernet wrong?

BTW i alreayd tried swithcing cables and ports before, thats not it either... but its again , a new motherboard, i dont get it why dont motherboard ethernet cards work?

They usually do, one of my 3 is an onboard. There must be something we are missing, onboards usually work just as well as pci.

Yea well i dont know whats missing but if the PCI solves it (which i hope it will) i will be a very happy man, told him to buy a PCI tomorrow so lets cross our fingers.. and god forbid anyone asks me with help wiht this crap again, i rather put together 10 computers than deal with this stuff again :(
