I want to install Windows 98 on the same hard drive as Windows XP. I upgraded to Windows XP from Windows 98 on a Compaq laptop Pentium II 300Ghz. The reason being, I tried to play DVD movies on Windows XP and it is slower and quite annoying, so I figured to have two operating systems. I was thinking of creating a second partition using FDISK. Should I use primary, logical or extended? Should I use FAT 16/32 or NTSC for Windows 98? Anything else?
Thanks,
Pat

If you use FDISK then you will wipe the data including XP.
Also Win98 does not support NTFS.
If you want to start from scratch then use FDISK to delete all partitions and create atleast two partititons.
The first will be for Win98. Install Win98
Then install XP to the second partititon.
I would suggest you use a dedicated partition utility such as Partition Magic.
You will be able to create a new partition for Win98 and install it without effecting XP.
You can then use BootMagic to choose which to boot into.
Saying all that, I would make sure you have checked your config and drivers as the DVD's should have no probs playing on XP if they work on 98.

Thanks for the info. The problem with the DVD is that it looks like a processor thing that can't handle operating XP and the DVD at the same time. The picture and sound skips and it isn't as steam like with Windows 98. I just figured it is a slower processor (P2 300G) and can't handle both and Windows 98 may not need as much processing. Just a hunch though. I have the ultimate boot CD so I'll look for a dedicate partition tool, unless I get other suggestions.
Thanks!

Howdy:
Could be your problem is one of RAM rather than processor !! Just how much ram is installed on your system?? XP sucks up 128megs like nothing.. gives 256megs a run for it's money and seems to enjoy 512 megs and up..
If you are trying to run XP and a DVD on less than 512, dump XP and stick with 98 or upgrade your ram..
