Have her boot into dos and type c:\scanreg/fix
This will take a little time.
When completed, type c:\scanreg/opt
Also, takes a little time.
This will compact the registry.
Try a boot and see what happens.

Unhappy

Hi, after trying Darth's suggestions we now have a different error x 2.
(1) while initializing device CONFIG:WIN PROTECTION ERROR.
(2) HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 04018356 XMS driver not installed.
any suggestions appreciated.
could this be a bad stick of RAM ?
