I'm trying to do my father-in-law a favor but working on an old computer someone gave him. Someone crammed Win 2000 on this antique with a 1.2 gig hard drive and 32 megs of RAM. You can only imagine how slow and clogged up it was. I copied all the drivers, did a clean install, and loaded Win98SE. It runs nicely except that I can't get it to recognize the modem and I get an ! in a yellow circle for the PS/2 mouse connections in Device Manager. I'm very frustrated with the modem and tried changing the PCI slots, deleting and adding, changing COM port but nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try going into the BIOS and switching the setting for "PnP OS" (Plug and Play Operating System).

Also try going into the BIOS and turning off ALL of the COM ports, this will free up IRQs 3 and 4. If you still cannot get it to behave look at the PCI slot on the motherboard, they should all be labeled PCI1, PCI2, PCI3, ETC.... Find the one that the modem is plugged into, go into the BIOS and force that PCI slot to use IRQ 3 or 4 if the BIOS will let you.
