I have just installed Win 98 SE and it won`t connect to the internet using modem. The modem dials out, gets through the the initial dial up and then when it`s supposed to connect I get an error message. When using peoplepc.com software the message says: Dialup system error: Port was disconnected by remote computer. If I use AOL it gets to the finalization step and then drops my connection. I could use all the help I can get :(

Hi,
When I use Winfax or Dial Up on the Laptop if problem with connection I always check following:
Can try in Win98 , Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems, Properties, Connection Tab, Call preferences.
"Wait for dial tone before dialling" should be unchecked.
Don,t ask me why! Hope it helps.
Regards

Thanks for the suggestion D ;) unfortunately I don`t even have that dial tone box lol. I wish I could figure out what`s the matter, it dials out but then loses it somewhere in trying to connect. How frustrating

It apears that your Dial-Up Networking configuration is the problem If the modem connects, then shuts down, you can probably rule out the modem itself.
Double-click on the Network icon in Control Panel.
You'll need the following network components installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks (optional)
Do you have these?
In Dial-Up Networking, right-click on the ICON for your connection, and select Properties.
Choose the Server Types tab, and turn off all of the options below except for Enabled software compression and TCP/IP.
Click TCP/IP Settings..., select Specify name server addresses, and enter the two DNS IP addresses obtained (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-100#1) from your ISP.
Click Ok and Ok again.

I assume you've doublechecked all your wiring. Have you tried reinstalling any modem drivers? [Sorry if I'm being too obvious; seems many problems are something simple]
edit; didn't see yours Murf, oops.
