Welcome to CTH Willow Raven. Are you able to boot into Safe Mode without the error message? Give it a try, restart your PC and tap F8 continuously as it restarts. If you can function in Safe Mode, it shouldnt be too hard to fix your problem. If not, how long has this been happening and did the problem co-incide with the installation of any new software and/or hardware?

Ok, you could try a manual restore of your registry to the last good backup. Win98 backs up 5 copies of your registry by default.

Reboot into DOS using:

Start > Shutdown > Reboot to MS-DOS mode

You will now be in DOS mode, and it should look like this: C:\Windows>

now type scanreg /restore

(note the space between "scanreg" and the forward slash)

At blue screen, use your mouse or keyboard arrows to choose a date which you know the registry was fine. The date you choose must say "Started" next to it. (try not to choose the oldest date, it probably will not restore).

Make sure the word "Restore" is highlighted, and press your keyboards Enter key. At the "You have restored........." prompt, press your keyboards Enter key.

Your computer will restart in MS-DOS mode again. Type: exit after the prompt and press your keyboards Enter key. Your computer will then re-start in Windows. See if that helps.

Did the problem occur after running Window Washer Willow Raven? If so, it should have made backups and we may be able to run the program by changing the windows shell from Explorer to Winfile. If you can give me as much detail as possible as to what you think caused the problem or the last steps you performed on this PC before the error happened, it will help us to help you. It would also help if you posted the exact errors in full please (you may have to click on more details).

Do you have your Win98 Installation CD?

We can try editing system.ini to take you into a Win3.1 type environment that will exclude the Explorer shell. Boot to DOS (select "Command Prompt Only" from the boot menu) or power up again with a Win98 bootdisk in the drive.

If using a bootdisk, at the a:\> prompt enter the following and press enter after each line (if using a command prompt, skip the first step):

c:
cd windows
edit system.ini

Scroll down to the Shell=Explorer.exe line and edit out Explorer.exe. Then make the line read Shell=Winfile.exe. Save the changes (Alt > Enter > Save and Alt > Enter > Exit) and reboot. If you can get that to work, you may be able to run Window Washer and restore backups if it has this options. Find the executable and and try doubleclicking on it to run it or go to File > Run and type the name of the executable in the box and click on OK. Let us know how you get on.
