Hello, I've tried pretty much everything without success and now I'm turning to more knowledgeable guys for help, you. ^-^

The thing is, my sister got a computer and I took the task of getting it working. My sister and parents use the same computer so I took 128mb Kingston SDRam out of the old computer and the 10gb Maxtor hd and put it into the new one. I also put a RealTek ethernet network device, and here comes the problem.

Everything works fine until I install the drivers of network card. I've got 2 network cards, SMC 1233-TX and the RealTek one, both give me the same problem. After I have installed the drivers, Win98 wont boot anymore except in the fault mode. I tried to install winxp too out of frustation but it stuck up in the installation part where it researches the devices, apparently, it finds the network device and gets locked up bcuz of that.

A diagnosis program came with the SMC and I tried it too. The whole machine gets locked up when it starts looking for I/O settings, could that be the problem? If so, how to fix it?

At the moment of typing, XP is almost installed, I just took the network card out of the computer, and "everything" runs fine now. I have another PCI slot which I haven't tried yet (in case the other is broken) which I'm going to try after the installation.

The hardware is:
AMD k6-2 450mhz cpu
256 mb SDRAM
GeForce2 in AGP
Network card SMC 1233-TX and Realtek (something)
10gb Maxtor a bit ****id up hd (has been use for too long i'd say)

I'll supply you later with bios settings, motherboard info, and anything else you want. Please help me! My parents and my sis will skin me alive if I don't get the internet working soon.

If nothing works, I've also thought of getting a usb ethernet adaptor. Any comments..?

That's the first thing I would have told you to do. Take the NIC's out, install the drivers, put the NIC's back in and reboot. This most times work this way.
Most systems hang buy putting in NIC and then trying to install drivers. The system just has brainfarts this way.
Good luck and let us know.
