Hey folks!!
Just wanted to make sure that i can do this and not mess up my modem. I want to unplug and reset the modem. What had happened is that I physically installed the sound blaster, but then discovered that I didn't need it just yet... somehow my modem port (comm port 1) got switched to comm port 4! How can I return the modem to port 1??
Thouroughly confused?? (wry smiles)

Thanks

The Window's Plug-n-Play is a funny beast, installing a new piece of hardware will scatter the chess pieces all over the board and leave things a horrid mess.

There are a couple of ways to go about this, do you have an internal or external modem? I am kind of leaning towards you having an internal, an external should not be able to shift ports.

Hello Landon, thanks for responding to my question.
I have internal modem. I do have another question...althought it may be dumb (shrugs .. live and learn eh?) Does Win98 accept USB 1 and 2? Thanks Landon

Open the case and look at what PCI slot the modem is plugged into, it should be in little tiny print right next to the slot (PCI1, PCI2, etc.), boot up and go into the BIOS, go into the area where your COM PORTS are listed, turn them all off. Somewhere else in the BIOS you should have an option to force a PCI slot to use a particular IRQ, force it to use IRQ 4 then exit out of the BIOS (save the settings), when it reboots it should put it back on COM1.

I do not know if Windows 98 will support USB2 or not, USB1 it should.

Thanks Landon  USB1 [1.1] and USB2 can be used with [almost] any Operating System but if the computer itself hasn't got the USB 2 internal stuff the USB device only goes at the slower USB1 speed even if the device itself is USB2. You can buy USB2 cards to fit inside [if you have a spare slot,of course] :fyi: USB2 is reckoned to be fourty times the speed of USB1.[NB..This does not mean your computer would run fourty times as fast];)
